Emotional Aspects of Dentures & Missing Teeth

gb01203-img04

This last weekend I attended a Symposium (Osteogenics Global Symposium on Bone Grafting) this last weekend where one of the speakers discussed some of the psychological and social aspects of missing teeth and dentures.  A few of them are:

*   Holding hands over mouth out fearing your teeth will come out speaking or eating
*    Hiding the secret of having tooth loss or dentures
*    Decrease or total avoidance of social situations
*    WRINKLES and LOOKING YEARS OLDER than you really are
*    Depression is higher in these people.  They often feel “defeated by age”
*    Lowered self-confidence with
*    Poor self-image, dislike of appearance

This is actually similar to the problems I see with my high fear patients, especially those requiring dental sedation.  The amount of embarrassment they sense can be enormous.
